Activation Lock helps you keep your Mac secure if it's ever lost, stolen, or misplaced, and can improve your chances of recovering it. Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission, even if you erase your device remotely. All you need to do is keep Find My Mac turned on, and remember your Apple ID and password.

What you need

• Upgrade your Mac to macOS Catalina.
• Your Mac must have the Apple T2 Security Chip. You can learn whether your Mac has this chip in Apple menu  > About this Mac > System Report > Controller.
• Enable two-factor authentication for your Apple ID.
• Leave Secure Boot enabled on its default setting, Full Security, with 'Disallow booting from external media' selected under the External Boot section.

How it works

When you turn on Find My Mac, your Apple ID password or device passcode is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase your Mac, or reactivate and use your Mac.

Activation Lock is automatically enabled when you set up Find My on devices that meet its system requirements.

If your Mac goes missing

If you ever misplace your device or think it may have been stolen, you can sign into iCloud.com or use the Find My app to locate your device on a map, play a sound, lock your Mac, or erase it. Activation Lock works in the background to make it more difficult for someone to use or sell your missing device, but you can still remotely lock your device with Find My to secure it with a unique passcode and display a message onscreen for anyone who may find it.

How to check that Activation Lock is on

1. Choose Apple menu  > About this Mac.
2. Click System Report.
3. Click Activation Lock Status under Hardware.

Before you send your Mac in for service, sell it, or give it away, you should turn off Activation Lock. If you have access to the device, turn off Find My Mac to disable Activation Lock, and then sign out of iCloud.

1. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences.
2. Click Apple ID, then click iCloud.
3. Turn off Find My Mac.
4. Click the Sign Out button.

If you can't access your Mac and you need to turn off Activation Lock, follow these steps.

1. Go to iCloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID.

3. Select All Devices, then click your Mac.

Change the Background Image of the Lock Screen

Before anything else, you need to decide on a good-quality background image. This image can make your screen look clear and crisp. Ideally, it should be in full-HD or at least in 4K resolution. After you’ve chosen a background image, follow these steps on how to change the login and lock screen background on Mojave:

1. Right-click on your desktop.
2. Choose the Change Desktop Background option. The Desktop & Screen Saver window should appear.
3. Navigate to the Desktop tab.
4. Select a background image from the list of available wallpapers.
5. Verify if the change has been applied. Lock your screen by clicking on the Apple menu and selecting Lock Screen. Alternatively, you can use the CTRL + CMD + Q shortcut keys. The new background image you selected should be what’s on your lock screen as well. Otherwise, you need to redo all the steps.

Change Your User Account Photo

For macOS Mojave users, there are over 40 different photos provided by Apple for you to choose from as your user account photo. But if you don’t like any, you can also set a custom one. Here is how you can change your user account photo:

1. Add or upload a photo if you want a custom one. If you’re okay with the default photos provided by Apple, you can skip this step. Ideally, the user account photo should be square in size and should have a 700×700 pixel resolution. Save it under your Photos app.
2. Open the Apple menu and click System Preferences.
3. Select Users & Groups.
4. Click on the user account image. A photo selection menu should pop up.
5. Select a new user account photo. If you want to use the photo you just saved, scroll down to the bottom. It’s usually added there. Once you’ve chosen one, click Next.
6. Adjust the slider to the right if you want to zoom in the photo. Once you’re satisfied with the size, hit Save.
7. Verify if the change has been applied. Go to your lock screen by using the CTRL + CMD + Q shortcut key and check if your user account image has been changed.

Add a Text or a Message on the Lock Screen

Your MacBook is so compact that it can be conveniently carried around in the airport, café, or even in meetings. However, because it’s so lightweight, there are times when you absentmindedly forget about it. In case somebody sees it, how can he identify the owner and return it to you?

1. Go to the Apple menu.
2. Choose System Preferences.
3. Click Security & Privacy.
4. At the bottom right portion of the screen, click the Lock icon. You will be prompted to enter your administrator username and password to unlock the add text setting.
5. Hit Unlock.
6. Navigate to the General tab and tick the box beside the Show a message when the screen is locked option.
7. Enter a custom text in the text field. Once you’re done, click OK.
8. Finally, click the Lock icon to lock the setting back.
9. To verify if the custom message has been added, access your lock screen using the CTRL + CMD + Q shortcut key.

Add Password Protection Setting After the Screensaver Shows

Many Mac Mojave users prefer to use a screensaver. They then set their system to automatically enter sleep mode after a few minutes of not being used.

Although there is nothing wrong with that setting, it is noteworthy that the sleep mode or the screensaver won’t activate the lock screen. This means anyone can quickly jump into your Mac and gain access to your system and files.
